Driving to Orlando, Florida

Driving south from Winnipeg on a Tuesday morning, the sky was dark grey all day. There wasn't a clear bright patch or rain. The US custom officer asked for my estimation of arrival. I said Friday afternoon. He asked again for a specific time. Well, okay 5 pm.

Approaching Grand Forks, I noticed two identical highway signs indicating the next town and milage, one in front of the other, no more than two feet apart. Similarly, when I exited Grand Forks, twice I saw duplicated signs in front of the other, both indicated speed limits. Perhaps, the city of Grand Forks is doing this to get drivers' attention (it certainly got mine.) Or the city bureacrat did not provide a work order for the removal of the old sign. Yet, the sign at the back did not look rusty or faded. Perhaps there were extra signs in the shop and senior management decided to ask the newbie to put them out on the highway. It made grandiose sense!

After driving close to 1,000 km, I pulled off interstate 35, I-44 in Iowa. I checked into a Best Western hotel and proceeded to the gas/restaurant across the street. I was quite surprised to see the name Boondocks, Iowa on shirts and walls. The place is middle of no where. The waitress assured me that the place is called "Boondocks". The next day the gas attendent corrected that, only the gas station and resturant is called that, the village is called Williams.
